Why Mint?
Many visitors are surprised to learn that North Judson has long been associated with mint production. The sandy soils, abundant water supply, and favorable growing conditions of the Kankakee River region created an ideal environment for cultivating peppermint and spearmint. For generations, local farmers have harvested mint that is distilled into oils used in products ranging from chewing gum and toothpaste to candies, lotions, and pharmaceuticals.
The area’s connection to mint farming became so significant that community leaders sought a way to celebrate this unique part of local history.
A Festival Born from the Bicentennial
The roots of the Mint Festival trace back to 1976 when North Judson joined communities across America in celebrating the nation’s Bicentennial. The event was such a success that residents wanted to continue gathering annually for a community wide celebration.
